Tangem & dApps

What is WalletConnect?

A decentralized application (dApp) is an application that interacts with blockchain networks through smart contracts. WalletConnect is a protocol that lets you securely connect Tangem Wallet to dApps.

Through WalletConnect, you can interact with supported dApps to swap tokens, stake crypto, manage NFTs, provide liquidity, and use other Web3 services.

You can connect to dApps from both mobile devices and computers.

The WalletConnect website has a complete list of dApps available for connection.

For step-by-step instructions, see How to use WalletConnect in Tangem Wallet.

To sign a transaction, follow these steps:

  1. Initialize the transaction on the website / in the dApp application.
  2. Tangem Wallet will receive a request to sign a transaction with the following information:
    • Name and domain of the dApp.
    • dApp verification status.
    • Transaction details: The number of tokens that will be sent from your wallet and received to your wallet.
    • The wallet where the transaction will be carried out (if you have several wallts).
    • Selected network.
    • Network commission (gas fee).
  3. Check the data and tap Send.
  4. Confirm the transaction to sign it. For more details, see How to confirm actions in your wallet.

Important: If you receive a security warning about a transaction involving a malicious address, do not confirm it.

What can I do with dApps?

WalletConnect lets you connect Tangem Wallet to supported third-party dApps and interact with Web3 services directly from your wallet.

Depending on the dApp, you can use WalletConnect to interact with DeFi protocols, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), staking services, NFT marketplaces, lending platforms, liquidity pools, games, and other Web3 applications.

Available features depend on the dApp and the network it supports.

Can I manage NFTs through a marketplace?

Tangem Wallet lets you receive, store, send, and view supported NFTs, but it doesn't have a built-in NFT marketplace for buying, selling, or trading them. However, you can connect Tangem Wallet to supported NFT marketplaces like OpenSea or Rarible via WalletConnect.

This allows you to view and manage your NFTs through the marketplace, including listing them for sale.

How do I know if a dApp is safe?

When linking your wallet to a third-party decentralized application (dApp), proceed with utmost care. Granting permission for a dApp to use your smart contract means entrusting it with control over your funds. Before doing so, ensure the dApp is legitimate and not malicious.

Before connecting:

  • Check that you're using the dApp's official website and domain.
  • Review the verification status shown by Tangem.
  • Check the access permissions requested by the dApp.
  • Never enter your seed phrase or private key into a dApp or website.

Tangem displays the dApp's verification status in the connection window:

  1. A blue checkmark indicates a verified dApp. This means its domain has been authenticated in the WalletConnect internal library and the Blockaid.io service. While connecting to such dApps is generally secure, we recommend verifying that you're accessing the official website.
  2. An unverified dApp is marked with a security warning: the domain cannot be verified. This doesn’t mean it’s a scam, but the domain should be examined manually.
  3. A suspicious dApp displays a security warning: multiple independent sources flagged the site as malicious. It is highly advised not to connect your wallet.

Important: A verified status does not guarantee that every interaction with the dApp is safe. Always check the website, requested permissions, and transaction details before confirming.

Security tips when using dApps

  1. Do your own research (DYOR)
    • Look for information about dApps online by searching with the word "scam" appended to your query. This will help you uncover any complaints or warnings from other users.
    • Identify the team behind the project. Reliable dApps typically have a public team listed.
    • Check if a security audit has been performed. Many projects disclose audit results on their websites.
    • Engage with the crypto community on various online platforms. By joining crypto forums and groups, you can gather recommendations and feedback from other users. However, be cautious and rely only on public discussions, as scammers often hide in private messages.
  2. Never reveal your seed phrase*. Any decentralized application (dApp) that requests your private key or seed phrase is a scam. Your private keys and seed phrase should be kept secret and known only to you. Do not enter this sensitive information on any website, and never share it with anyone, even if they appear to be representatives of the dApp.

If you have any doubts about a dApp or the requested permissions, cancel the connection.

*Please note that this info applies only to second-gen Tangem Wallets.

What are smart contract approvals?

Some dApps require a token approval before a smart contract can use a specific token on your behalf. The approval defines how much of that token the smart contract is allowed to spend.

Depending on the dApp, the approval may be limited to a specific amount or remain active until you revoke it.

Important: Disconnecting a dApp from Tangem Wallet does not revoke previously granted smart contract approvals. If you no longer use or trust a dApp, revoke its approvals separately.

How do I disconnect my Tangem Wallet from dApps?

To disconnect Tangem Wallet from a dApp, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Tangem app.
  2. Tap on the three dots in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select WalletConnect
  4. Tap the active connection and select Disconnect. To disconnect all dApps at once, tap the three dots, then select Disconnect all.

Disconnecting ends the active WalletConnect session, so the dApp can no longer send new requests to Tangem Wallet.

Important: Disconnecting a dApp from Tangem Wallet does not revoke previously granted smart contract approvals. If you no longer use or trust a dApp, revoke its approvals separately.

How do I revoke a smart contract approval?

When granting permission to use smart contracts, you can grant it for the current transaction or unlimited.

An unlimited approval allows a smart contract to spend the approved token without requiring a new approval for each interaction. This can reduce the number of approval transactions and related network fees, but it also gives the smart contract broader access to your tokens.

If you no longer use or trust a dApp, revoke any approvals you previously granted.

You can revoke permission through special services, for example:

To revoke permissions, follow these steps:

  1. Follow the link to the browser of the corresponding blockchain.
  2. Tap Connect to Web3 / Connect Wallet and select WalletConnect.
  3. Connect your wallet.
  4. To display all active approvals, please toggle the Show All Approvals.
  5. In the list of permissions, use Revoke to revoke permission.

We intend to include the capability to revoke permission directly in future updates to the Tangem app.

What should I do if I interacted with a malicious dApp?

There is a common scam where people are tricked into connecting their wallets to fraudulent dApps. When you connect to a rogue dApp and allow the smart contract to access your assets, you essentially give that rogue dApp's smart contract permissions to manage your funds.

If you connected your wallet to or signed a transaction with a suspicious or malicious dApp:

  1. Disconnect the dApp from WalletConnect.
  2. Revoke any smart contract approvals you granted to the dApp.
  3. Do not confirm any further requests from the dApp.
  4. If you believe your assets are still at risk, consider transferring them to a new wallet.

Important: Blockchain transactions that have already been confirmed cannot be canceled or reversed.

Reset your wallet to factory settings
If you still have security concerns after disconnecting the dApp and revoking its approvals, you can reset your wallet to factory settings and create a new wallet.

Resetting the device to factory settings involves completely deleting the keys. After this action, access to the current wallet on the selected device will not be possible.

Before resetting it, make sure you have transferred your assets to another wallet or exchange.

For detailed instructions, see How to reset the Tangem Wallet to factory settings.
