Binance faces DOJ scrutiny over Iran links, $4.3B settlement

Binance faces renewed DOJ scrutiny over its $4.3B settlement, focusing on possible Iran sanctions violations and suspicious transactions tied to Iranian entities.

Binance is once again under scrutiny from U.S. and Swiss law enforcement, as well as the Department of Justice (DOJ), regarding its compliance with a $4.3 billion settlement reached in 2023. The Wall Street Journal reports that Binance labeled a customer linked to an Iranian crypto firm as a "high-value customer." Authorities are concerned about transactions involving an Iranian money changer and repeated account access from Tehran. The DOJ is investigating whether Binance violated its settlement, focusing on potential breaches of Iran sanctions. Prosecutors are seeking to seize $61 million allegedly laundered through Binance from Iranian oil sales and are reviewing accounts tied to Babak Zanjani, which reportedly processed about $850 million. Binance has stated it closed the implicated accounts and investigated the companies involved. While no wrongdoing has been alleged against Binance or its employees, these ongoing investigations could significantly impact the exchange’s regulatory status and market sentiment.
