Italian police bust €68M mafia crypto laundering network

Italian police arrested 30 suspects in a €68M mafia-linked crypto laundering probe involving false invoices, cross-border transfers, and ties to 'Ndrangheta and Camorra groups.

Italian authorities have launched a major operation targeting 30 suspects accused of laundering €68 million through a mafia-linked underground banking network. The investigation focuses on a car rental business in Pero, near Milan, allegedly used as a front to move funds abroad via cryptocurrency exchanges and digital wallets. The network reportedly issued over €110 million in false invoices through shell companies, enabling clients—including tax evaders and drug traffickers—to receive cash and evade taxes. The operation extended to Spain and Switzerland, resulting in 16 suspects placed in pre-trial detention and 14 under house arrest. Authorities have ordered the seizure of assets worth over €21 million. The network is said to have ties to the 'Ndrangheta and Camorra groups, as well as collaborators of Albanian and Chinese origin. Some laundered funds allegedly supported imprisoned mafia members, highlighting the role of cryptocurrency in organized crime money laundering schemes.
