ICIJ Uncovers Crypto Exchanges' Role in Global Crime Wave

ICIJ's "Coin Laundry" reports reveal how major crypto exchanges are used for global money laundering, linking billions in transactions to organized crime, drug cartels, and trafficking, raising urgent questions about industry oversight.

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has released a series of reports, dubbed the "Coin Laundry," exposing how major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Binance, OKX, Coinbase, Kraken, Bybit, and Kucoin have been used to facilitate global money laundering and other illicit activities. The investigation, involving over 100 journalists from more than 35 countries, traced billions in crypto transactions linked to organized crime, drug cartels, human trafficking, and state-sponsored hacking groups. The reports detail how criminals exploit the speed, anonymity, and global reach of blockchain technology to move illicit funds, often through unregulated exchanges and crypto-cash storefronts in jurisdictions with lax oversight. Specific cases include funds from Chinese crime gangs and drug traffickers flowing through exchanges, and links to Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel. While exchanges claim to use compliance and monitoring tools, the ICIJ highlights the challenges regulators face in keeping pace with the rapidly evolving crypto landscape. The findings have intensified calls for stronger oversight and raised concerns about the crypto industry's role in enabling financial crime.
