UK crime agency ranks crypto as top economic crime threat
The UK's NECC ranks cryptoassets as its third-highest economic crime priority, citing innovative laundering tactics and a shift to intelligence-led enforcement. Operation Destabilise has led to 129 arrests and £25 million seized since 2022.
The UK's National Economic Crime Centre (NECC) has ranked cryptoassets as the third-highest priority among nine economic crime threats, following professional enablers and politically exposed persons. The NECC's annual report notes that criminals are increasingly using innovative crypto products to evade detection and transfer illicit value at scale. Laundering networks now combine traditional and novel techniques across borders, with many organized crime groups outsourcing money laundering to specialized networks for a fee. In response, the NECC is adopting a more proactive, intelligence-led approach to crypto crime, aiming to generate its own targets rather than relying solely on external tips. Operation Destabilise, which targets crypto-related crime, has resulted in 129 arrests and over £25 million seized since 2022. The agency also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in economic crime, including synthetic identities and process automation. A RUSI paper commissioned by the NECC advises against banning crypto privacy tools, warning that such bans could be counterproductive.
