Depending on your card tier and issuer, a Visa card can include purchase protection, extended warranty, price protection, rental car collision coverage, baggage insurance, travel assistance, and hotel perks. None of these benefits apply automatically to every cardholder: the issuer decides which ones to offer, your card tier determines eligibility, and you generally must pay for the covered item entirely with the qualifying card. Check your card's Guide to Benefits to confirm what you actually have.

Which Visa benefits do you actually have?

Visa's benefit categories can include travel, emergency assistance, purchase protection, extended warranty, rental car collision coverage, roadside assistance, rewards, and merchant offers. But available benefits vary by card tier, issuing financial institution, and country or region. Visa itself states that issuers may add benefits beyond Visa's standard offerings or may not activate every standard benefit.

Here's the practical check: contact your issuer and request the current Guide to Benefits for your card. That document contains the applicable terms, conditions, exclusions, coverage limits, and whether optional benefits are included. Don't assume that Visa-branded benefits apply automatically, because the issuer tier may differ from the Visa card type, and the issuer's version of a benefit can differ from Visa's standard description. Read it before any major purchase or trip.

The three main Visa card tiers in the US are Visa Traditional, Visa Signature, and Visa Infinite. Purchase protection, extended warranty, and travel benefits are typically associated with Signature and Infinite. Entry-level cards may carry few or none of these protections. If you're unsure which tier your card sits on, it's printed on the card or listed in your online account.

Purchase protection

Visa Purchase Security covers eligible purchases made with a qualifying Visa card against theft or specified accidental damage. Coverage applies during the first 90 days after purchase. Exclusions include animals, living plants, antiques, collectibles, and motor vehicles, among others.

Coverage limits vary by tier. Published examples range from USD 1,000 per account per 12-month period for Visa Gold, up to USD 10,000 per event and USD 20,000 per account per 12-month period for higher tiers, but the card-specific benefits guide controls apply. The claim deadline is generally 60 days after the theft or damage occurs. Required documents include a signed claim form, a card statement, an itemized receipt, a police or incident report, where applicable, and a repair estimate or invoice for damage claims.

One important distinction: if a merchant accepts a return or issues a refund, that's a merchant transaction, not a purchase-protection claim. For a refund, contact the merchant first. Purchase protection applies when the merchant won't cover the loss, typically due to theft or accidental damage outside the return window.

Extended warranty

Extended warranty protection extends the manufacturer's original warranty on eligible purchases made with a qualifying Visa card. The specifics, including how many additional months are added and the maximum coverage amount, depend on your card's Guide to Benefits.

Not all products are eligible. Items like vehicles, real estate, used or pre-owned goods, and consumables are typically excluded. As with purchase protection, you must pay for the item entirely with the eligible card to qualify. Keep your original receipt, the manufacturer's warranty documentation, and your card statement. You'll need all three if you file a claim.

Price protection

Price protection reimburses the difference if you find a lower advertised price for an item you recently purchased with your eligible Visa card. The benefit applies within a defined window after purchase, typically 60 to 90 days, though the exact period depends on your card terms.

Exclusions commonly include auction purchases, limited-quantity or clearance sales, and items purchased outside the eligible country. There's usually a per-item cap and an annual cap, both specified in your Guide to Benefits. This benefit has become less common on newer card products. Check your Guide to Benefits before assuming it's included.

Auto rental collision coverage

This is one of the more valuable travel benefits. Visa auto rental collision coverage provides primary collision and theft protection when you rent an eligible vehicle, pay the entire rental with your qualifying Visa card, and decline the rental company's collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW). Coverage applies for up to 15 consecutive days domestically and 31 days internationally. Declining the rental company's CDW/LDW is mandatory: accepting it cancels the Visa benefit entirely.

Excluded vehicles include expensive, exotic, antique, cargo-bed, certain vans, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, motorbikes, limousines, and recreational vehicles. Rentals in Israel, Jamaica, Ireland, and Northern Ireland are also excluded. This benefit covers collision and theft. It does not cover liability, meaning damage to other vehicles or property, or personal injury.

After theft or damage, notify the benefit administrator immediately. Gather the accident report, rental agreements, repair estimate or bill, and any available photographs. Submit the signed claim form within 90 days, along with proof that the entire rental was paid using the eligible card.

Baggage delay and baggage loss insurance

Baggage delay coverage may apply when a common carrier delays or misdirects your baggage for more than six hours. It can reimburse emergency essentials such as toiletries, clothing, and device chargers, up to $100 per day for five days. Excluded items include money, documents, jewelry, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, and electronic equipment.

Baggage loss coverage may reimburse direct physical loss or damage to checked or carry-on baggage and personal property. Published policy examples show a maximum of $1,000 per insured per covered trip, with a $250 sublimit for jewelry and fur. Exclusions include fraud, war, confiscation, animals, perishables, money, documents, electronics, business items, and certain sporting equipment.

Claims generally require prompt notification to the carrier and written notice to the benefit administrator within 45 to 90 days, depending on the policy. Keep receipts for any emergency purchases and file the carrier's property irregularity report at the airport. Eligibility for covered persons and exact payment terms depend on the applicable card tier or policy, so check your Guide to Benefits.

Travel and emergency assistance

Visa Travel and Emergency Assistance Services provide referral and logistical help, not insurance. That distinction matters: Visa connects you with services, but you pay for the goods and services arranged. The service covers eligible U.S.-issued Visa cardholders, their spouses, and dependents under 22 who are traveling away from home. Available assistance includes emergency messages, medical and legal referrals, emergency transportation arrangements, ticket and luggage assistance, translation, prescription help, document delivery, and pre-trip information.

Visa Luxury Hotel Collection

Visa Luxury Hotel Collection is available to eligible Visa Signature and Visa Infinite cardholders who book participating properties through an official Visa Luxury Hotel Collection website or Visa Concierge. The qualifying Visa card must be used for both booking and payment. Visa Infinite cardholders may receive an additional property-specific benefit.

Standard benefits at participating properties may include:

  • An available room upgrade at check-in
  • In-room Wi-Fi where available
  • Daily continental breakfast for the cardholder and one guest
  • A single $25 USD food-and-beverage credit per room per stay
  • VIP guest status
  • Late checkout up to 3 p.m. when available

Substitutions may apply, and resort fees that cover included benefits are not reimbursable. Participating properties may impose minimum-stay or room-category requirements, and property-specific terms apply.

How to claim a Visa benefit

The general process is consistent across most Visa benefits, though deadlines and documents vary.

  1. Pay with the eligible card. The purchase or travel expense must have been paid entirely with the qualifying Visa card. Partial payment generally disqualifies the claim.

  2. Keep your documentation. Receipts, itemized invoices, booking confirmations, police or incident reports, and repair estimates are all commonly required. Gather them at the time of the event, not weeks later.

  3. Contact the benefit administrator promptly. Submit through the Visa Benefits Portal or use the customer-service number on the back of your card. For most benefits, report the claim within 90 days of the incident.

  4. Upload required documents. Through the portal, select "Claims," then "Create Claim," choose the relevant product and benefit, and upload your documents.

  5. Distinguish the claim type. A merchant refund is issued by the seller. A card dispute or chargeback goes through your issuer after you've tried to resolve it with the seller. A Visa benefit claim is separate from both. A full merchant refund generally prevents further chargebacks or benefit claims on the same item.

The claim deadline and document requirements vary by benefit, so confirm the specifics in your Guide to Benefits before filing.

Visa benefits on Tangem Pay

Tangem Pay is a non-custodial payment account built into the Tangem Wallet app. You top it up with either USDC on Polygon, a U.S. bank transfer, or USDT, and spend with a virtual or physical Visa card. It works with Apple Pay and Google Pay for online or contactless purchases.

Tangem Pay Visa Platinum is a standard Visa card. The additional benefits are tied to Visa Signature and are available with the Plus plan. Visa Signature benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty and price protection, rental-car insurance, airport lounge and dining offers, and hotel privileges. Coverage terms and eligibility requirements apply; for example, lounge entry fees are paid by the cardholder. Check Tangem Pay for current terms before relying on a benefit.

You need a Tangem Mobile wallet, Tangem app, a supported region, and one-time KYC to set up the payment account. That tells you how to access the product, not which Visa benefits your card includes. Confirm those details in the live terms before you pay. Save the terms before you book or buy.

Final thoughts

Visa card benefits can cover a meaningful range of situations, from a stolen laptop in the first 90 days of ownership to a delayed bag on an international flight. But the coverage you actually have depends on three things: your card tier, your issuer's terms, and whether you paid with the eligible card. The Guide to Benefits is the only document that answers all three questions for your specific card.

Fees, limits, and availability are subject to change. Check the Tangem Pay page for current terms. This article is not financial or tax advice. Tangem Pay availability and features depend on country and eligibility.

Поширені запитання

  • No. Purchase protection is usually included on higher tiers such as Visa Signature and Visa Infinite, and the issuer decides whether to offer it. Check your card's benefits guide to confirm eligibility, limits, and exclusions.

  • Pay for the purchase or trip in full with the eligible card, keep receipts and all supporting documents, and contact the benefits administrator listed in your card terms within the claim deadline. For most benefits, the deadline is 90 days from the date of the incident. Requirements vary by benefit and issuer, so confirm the specifics in your Guide to Benefits before filing.

  • It depends on the card tier and issuer. Many premium Visa cards include auto rental collision coverage and some travel protections, while entry-level cards may not.

  • A crypto card's Visa tier alone does not guarantee all benefits, because the issuer may make certain benefits optional or impose its own terms.

  • It can. Many Visa benefits require the full eligible purchase or travel expense to be paid with the qualifying card. A split payment can leave you without coverage, so read the payment condition in your Guide to Benefits before you book.
