App Functionality

  • What do I do if I can’t scan the card?

If you use an iOS device, you should tap the card on the top of your iPhone and hold it until it is scanned. When you tap the "Scan" button, an animation shows you how to attach the card correctly to your phone. In some cases, we also advise you to restart the mobile device.

If you use an Android device, we advise you to pay attention to the following points while scanning the card:
    1. Сheck if the NFC module is enabled on your device and for the Tangem app.
    2. Remove the case from the mobile device, as it may interfere with the NFC module.
    3. The NFC module location is different on Android mobile devices. You need to determine the exact location of the NFC module on your phone. You can do this using the hint by tapping the "How to" button in the scan window.
    4. Then you need to tap the card on your mobile device a little longer when scanning because sometimes the NFC module on Android devices responds longer than usual.
    5. Sometimes, we advise you to restart the mobile device.

If the issue is not solved after following all the steps, please send a request through the app in the window "Are you having trouble scanning the card?" by double-clicking "Cancel" when scanning.

  • What do I do if I can't create a backup and see the "This card already has a wallet" error message?

If you receive the message "A wallet has already been created on this card", it may mean that you accidentally scanned both cards, creating a separate wallet on the second card. To fix this issue, you'll need to reset the card to its factory settings. Follow these steps:

    1. Close the app (don't just minimize it) to stop the backup process.
    2. Reopen the app and scan the card with the error.
    3. If cryptocurrency is stored on this card, temporarily move it to another location, such as another wallet or an exchange.
    4. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
    5. Choose the desired wallet from the list.
    6. Tap on "Card settings", then "Reset to Factory Settings".
    7. Scan the card again.

Once this is done, you can create a backup using these instructions:
    1. Scan the card on which the wallet has already been created.
    2. Select "Backup".
    3. Click on "Add a backup card".
    4. Scan the backup card by placing it near the device.
    5. If you have another card, you can add it or complete the process. To link a third card, tap "Add a backup card" and scan the card.
    6. Click "Finalize the backup".
    7. Select "Continue" and create an access code.
    8. Scan all the cards one by one again.

Important! If you have funds on the card, move them to another location before resetting the card to factory settings, as resetting the card will result in a complete erasure of all funds currently stored on it.

  • What languages does the Tangem app support?

The Tangem app is fully available in English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and Ukranian and partially in Italian and Traditional Chinese.

  • Can I use multiple wallets on one device?

You can use an unlimited number of wallets on one mobile device. The phone itself doesn't store any assets you hold; it simply acts as a display by visualizing specific data for a particular user on screen. The storage of private keys and signing of transactions is done by your card.

  • How do I change an access code?

Method 1: If you forgot your access code
If you forget the access code for one or all of your cards, you can reset it and set a new access code. To do this, you will need two cards: the card whose access code you want to change and a backup card to confirm the reset.

    1. If you are not using biometric authentication, open the Tangem app, scan the card you want to reset the access code for, and proceed to step 5 of these instructions. If using biometric authentication, open the Tangem app and tap the three dots in the upper right corner of the homepage.
    2. Select the desired wallet from the list.
    3. Go to Card Settings.
    4. Scan the card on which you want to reset the access code.
    5. On the access code entry screen, tap “Forgot your code?”.
    6. On the next screen, enter the new access code twice.
The access code can consist of any word, phrase, or number that you want to use as the access code. The minimum number of characters is 4; the maximum number is unlimited.
    7. Click Continue and attach the card you want to reset the access code. Wait for the 15-second countdown to end.
    8. Press Continue and attach the backup card (the second or third card in the set). Wait for the 15-second countdown to end.
    9. Scan the card you want to change the access code on.

Your forgotten access code has been successfully reset, and you can now use the new access code.

Detailed instructions are also available in our blog article: How to reset the access code on Tangem Wallet.

Method 2: If you remember your card access code:
    1. Open your wallet in the Tangem app, and on the homepage, tap on the three dots in the top right corner.
    2. Select the desired wallet from the list.
    3. Next, go to the Card Settings section.
    4. Scan the card on which you want to reset the passcode.
    5. Enter the current access code and click Continue.
    6. Scan the card for which you want to change the access code again.
    7. Select Change Access Code and use biometric authentication or enter the access code. 8. Enter the new access code twice and click Continue.
The access code can consist of any word, phrase, or number you want to use as an access code. The minimum number of characters is 4; the maximum number is unlimited.
    9. Scan the card on which you are changing the access code.
    10. If you do not use biometric authentication, enter the current access code at the next step (note: don’t enter a new code). Then click “Continue” and scan the card again.

Detailed instructions are also available in our blog article: How to change the access code on Tangem Wallet.

Important! The access code is stored on each card separately. When you change the access code, it changes only on the selected card. If you want to change/reset the access code on other cards, you must repeat the procedure with each card.

  • How do I exchange one cryptocurrency for another in my wallet?

Third-party platforms such as ChangeNOW, Changelly, ChangeHero, 1inch, and OKX facilitate the exchange of cryptocurrencies in the Tangem app.

Here are the steps to swap cryptocurrencies:
    1. Open the Tangem app and log into your wallet.
    2. Select the currency you want to exchange.
    3. Tap "Swap" on the Token page.
    4. Specify the amount and select the currency you want to receive. Tangem Express will show you the provider offering the best rates. You can tap on a listed provider to see all available providers and their rates.
    5. Tap "Swap" and enter your access code or biometric ID.
    6. Scan your Tangem card to confirm the transaction.

You can also connect Tangem Wallet to various decentralized exchanges (DEX) such as Uniswap, PancakeSwap, and others through WalletConnect.
For detailed instructions on using WalletConnect on Tangem Wallet, visit our blog: How to use WalletConnect on Tangem Wallet.

  • Why do I need to give permission to a smart contract before exchanging cryptocurrency through 1inch/OKX?

The exchange process includes two stages:
    1. Granting permission to a smart contract (occurs with the deduction of a small network commission).
    2. Swapping one cryptocurrency for another (occurs with the deduction of a higher network commission).

Granting permission is a standard procedure for all decentralized exchanges such as Uniswap, PancakeSwap, CowSwap, 1inch, etc. It protects your wallet from unauthorized access by a smart contract without your consent.
Smart contracts cannot access your tokens unless you give them access. By granting such permission, you give the smart contract the liberty to spend your assets. The miners, in turn, receive a commission for recording this action on the blockchain which is paid by you (gas fee).

Here are the step-by-step instructions on what granting permission looks like in the Tangem application:

    1. Open the Tangem app and log in to your wallet.
    2. Select the cryptocurrency you want to exchange.
    3. On the cryptocurrency’s page, tap Swap.
    4. Enter the amount of tokens you want to exchange and select the currency you want to exchange them for.
    5. Tap Give permission. A window will open, showing the fee for issuing a permit. You can also choose to issue a permit for the current transaction or unlimited. Then tap Approve and scan your wallet.
At this point, you have given permission but not completed the swap.
    6. To exchange your crypto, Tap Swap, then scan your wallet to sign the transaction. Once the transaction is signed and sent to the blockchain, its data can be viewed in the browser.

    Benefits of granting unlimited permission
If you have granted unlimited permission to a smart contract, you will not need to do this again for future transactions (only if you don’t revoke the permission).

    Important points
    • Permission is required for each individual smart contract.
    • Swap permission will only be requested if you exchange a token that operates under smart contracts (for example, an ERC20 token). For native coins, such permission is not needed since they’re regulated by blockchain algorithms, not smart contracts.

  • How do I add a token to the homepage?

With these two methods, you can add a token to your wallet’s homepage:

Method 1: Through the "Manage tokens" section
    1. Open the app and log in to your wallet.
    2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
    3. Select the desired wallet.
    4. Go to the "Manage Tokens" section.
    5. Use the search bar to find the cryptocurrency by name or ticker.
    6. To the right of the cryptocurrency name, an arrow opens a list of available networks for this token.
    7. Enable the switch for the network you need and tap "Save". You may need to scan your wallet here.

Method 2: Through the "Market" section
    1. Open the app and log in to your wallet.
    2. Tap the Search through the market bar at the bottom or pull it upwards.
    3. Find the cryptocurrency by name, ticker, or contract address and tap on it.
    4. In the "My Portfolio" section, tap "Add to Portfolio". Note that Markets section allows you to search for any cryptocurrency listed on CoinGecko. If the message "This asset is not available" appears instead of the "Add to Portfolio" button, it means Tangem does not currently support this cryptocurrency, and you cannot add it to your portfolio.
    5. If you have multiple wallets, select the one where you want to add the token.
    6. Enable the switch for the network you need and tap "Continue". You may need to scan your wallet here.

  • How can I view the cryptocurrency price chart?

The Tangem app allows you to track and analyze a wide range of data across multiple cryptocurrencies.

To access this data, follow these steps:
    1. Open the app and log into your wallet.
    2. At the bottom of the screen, tap the "Search through the market" bar or pull it upwards.
    3. Find the cryptocurrency you need by name, ticker, or contract address.
    4. Select the cryptocurrency from the list.

After selecting a cryptocurrency, you’ll have access to the following information:

    1. Current price and 24-hour change: Cryptocurrency prices update every minute, showing the current price and its change over the past 24 hours. Prices for tokens with a market capitalization of less than 100,000 USD are updated every 15 minutes.

    2. Price chart: You can analyze the cryptocurrency's price changes over various periods: 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, or the entire history of the cryptocurrency.

    3. General information: A brief overview of the cryptocurrency, including key project details.

    4. Insights: This section includes the following metrics for the selected period (24 hours, 7 days, 1 month): - Experienced buyers: Buyers with at least 100 outgoing transactions.
    - Holders: Changes in the number of token holders during the selected period.
    - Liquidity: Changes in the available liquidity for the token.
    - Buy Pressure: The difference between the volume of buyers and sellers.
Moralis, a Web3 development platform, provides the data in this section, updated every two hours. Insights are available only for cryptocurrencies on EVM-compatible networks.

    5. Metrics: This section allows you to evaluate key indicators for the cryptocurrency market.
    - Market capitalization: The total market value of the cryptocurrency, calculated by multiplying the current coin price by the total circulating supply.
    - Market rating: The cryptocurrency's rank among all coins by market capitalization.
    - 24-hour trading volume: The total amount of cryptocurrency sold in the last 24 hours, indicating market activity and liquidity.
    - Fully diluted valuation: The theoretical total value of the cryptocurrency if all possible coins were in circulation, including those not yet issued.
    - Circulating supply: The total number of coins available for trading and in circulation.
    - Total supply: The maximum number of coins or tokens that can ever exist for the selected cryptocurrency. Data for these indicators is sourced from CoinGecko and is updated every minute.

    6. Price performance: This section helps assess price fluctuations and compare the current value with its peaks and lows over the selected period (24 hours, 1 month, or the cryptocurrency’s entire history). After selecting the time frame, the minimum price is displayed on the left and the maximum on the right. A blue line shows the current price, while a gray line represents the highest price over the selected period.

    7. Links: This section includes links to the project’s official website, documents, social media, repository, and other related resources.

In the "Market" section, you can also:
    - Add a cryptocurrency to your portfolio.
    - Stake tokens. Learn more about staking in the Tangem app in our blog article.
    - Copy your wallet address. Tap your wallet name in the "My Portfolio" section, then select "Receive."
    - Send, buy, sell, or exchange cryptocurrencies. If you have multiple wallets, tap your wallet name in the "My Portfolio" section to access these operations.

In the "Market" section, you can sort tokens by various criteria:
    - Rating: Cryptocurrencies are sorted by market capitalization.
    - Trending: Cryptocurrencies that are currently gaining popularity.
    - Experienced Buyers: Cryptocurrencies invested in by experienced buyers.
    - Top Gainers and Top Losers: Cryptocurrencies with the highest growth or decline over the selected period: 24 hours, 7 days, or 1 month.

Regardless of the sorting method, the cryptocurrency's rank, current price, and market capitalization are displayed under its name. Changing the period (24 hours, 7 days, or 1 month) affects the price growth/decline percentage and the chart. The list includes all cryptocurrencies from CoinGecko, with a market capitalization of more than $100,000. To see tokens with a lower market cap, select "Show Tokens" at the end of the search list.

CoinGecko provides the cryptocurrency list and all related data, except for the Insights block, where the information comes from Moralis. Detailed information on how CoinGecko calculates and evaluates various metrics can be found here.

  • How do I revoke smart contract permissions?

When granting permission to use smart contracts, you can grant it for the current transaction or unlimited. Giving an unlimited permit significantly saves you money compared to spending on commissions when confirming before each swap.

You can revoke permission through special services, for example:
    • Ethereum: ETH Etherscan Token Approval Checker
    • Binance Smart Chain:
    BSC Token Approval Checker
    • Polygon:
    Polygon Token Approval Checker
    • Arbitrum:
    Arbitrum Token Approval Checker
    • Fantom:
    Fantom Token Approval Checker
    • Optimistic Ethereum:
    Optimistic Ethereum Token Approval Checker
    • Avalanche C-Chain, XDC Network, Shibarium, Base:
    Revoke.cash

To revoke permissions, follow these steps:
    1. Follow the link to the browser of the corresponding blockchain.
    2. Click "Connect to Web3"/"Connect Wallet" and select WalletConnect.
    3. Connect your wallet.
    4. In the list of permissions, there will be a “Revoke” button opposite each of them. Click it to revoke permission.

We plan to add the ability to revoke permission directly in the Tangem app in future updates.

  • How do I reset the cards to factory settings?

Before resetting the card to the factory settings, please ensure you move any cryptocurrency stored in your Tangem wallet to a different location for a while (for instance, another wallet or exchange). This is important as resetting the card will result in the complete loss of all funds currently stored on it!

It's also crucial to remember the access code for each card. If you forget, you'll need to first reset the access codes on all cards using the backup card. Failing to do so will make a wallet reset on the backup card(s) impossible.

To reset the card to factory settings:

    1. Open the Tangem app and enter your wallet.

    2. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner.

    3. Choose the "Card settings" option.

    4. Tap the "Scan card" button and bring the card to your mobile device.

    5. Enter your access code.

    6. Tap "Continue" and bring the card to your mobile device.

    7. Choose the "Reset to factory settings" option.

    8. Please carefully read the warning that informs you that there will be no access to the current wallet on the chosen card after completing this action. If you agree, tap the "Reset the card" button.

    9. Confirm the action by tapping "Reset" again.

    10. Enter the access code and scan the card.

After taking these steps, the card will be reset to factory settings.

You can read the detailed instructions on our
    blog.

  • What happens to the balance on the card if you reset the cards to factory settings?

Resetting a card to factory settings leads to a total zeroing of the card and deletion of the keys. After this action, there will be no access to the current wallet on the chosen card. You must withdraw your cryptocurrency from your wallet before performing a reset to ensure that you don’t lose it.

  • How do I create a custom token? How do I add a token that isn’t in the "Manage tokens" list?

The Tangem app allows you to add custom tokens on most networks supported by the app.

This feature is available for the following networks: Arbitrum, Areon, Aurora, Avalanche C-Chain, BNB Beacon Chain, BNB Smart Chain, Base, Blast, Cardano, Cronos, Cyber, Decimal Smart Chain, DisChain (Ethereum Fair), Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Ethereum PoW, Fantom Opera, Flare, Hedera, Gnosis Chain, Kava EVM, Manta Pacific, Mantle, Moonbeam, Moonriver, OctaSpace, Optimistic Ethereum, PLAYA3ULL GAMES, Polygon, Polygon zkEVM, PulseChain, RSK, Shibarium, Solana, Telos, Tron, VeChain, XDC Network, and zkSync Era.

How to add a custom token to the Tangem wallet
To create a custom token, do this:
    1. Open the Tangem app.
    2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
    3. Select the preferred wallet.
    4. Go to the Manage tokens section.
    5. Tap the “+” icon in the upper right corner of the list of tokens.

To add a token, you need the following inputs:

    1. The token's smart contract address. The address can usually be found on coinmarketcap.com or in the explorer (browser) of the corresponding blockchain.

    2. The network where you want to add the token.

    3. The token name (for example, Bitcoin) and token symbol (for example, BTC).

    4. Decimals determine the value into which one token can be split for transactions. This value can be found in the token overview in the explorer of the corresponding blockchain.

    5. BIP44 coin type. For this operation, "Default" is usually selected.

For example, to add the BinaryX (BNX) token on the BNB Smart Chain network, you need to fill in the fields as follows:

    1. Contract address: 0x8C851d1a123Ff703BD1f9dabe631b69902Df5f97 You can see this contract address in the “Contracts” section via the link.

    2. Network: BNB Smart Chain. 3. Token name: BinaryX.

    4. Token symbol: BNX.

    5. Decimals: 18. You can see the number of decimal places in the token card in the explorer.

    6. BIP44 derivation: Default.

Detailed instructions are also available on our blog.

  • Why is the price of custom tokens not displayed?

If you've added a custom token via a smart contract address, we may not have the price for that token. These custom tokens won't be included in the total balance calculation, and instead of the price, a dash will be displayed next to the token name.

  • What rate is used to convert cryptocurrency into fiat?

The exchange rates in the Tangem app come from the major cryptocurrency aggregator coingecko.com and are updated every 15 minutes.

Please note that this is just a reference figure so that you can estimate the value of your portfolio.

We recommend following rates through an exchange app or a website for active trading.

  • Are Tangem servers used for blockchain operations?

Tangem doesn’t have its own servers that connect to blockchains. It is the app on your phone which communicates directly with the blockchain. Tangem's philosophy is to provide users with a technological solution for interacting with crypto assets and nothing more. The wallet protocol looks like this: card <-> application <-> blockchain.

  • Can I use the Tangem app without the internet on my phone?

Cryptocurrency is stored on blockchains, and the card holds the keys to the blockchain addresses. Without the internet, there is no access to the blockchain, and it is impossible to know your current balance so you can't spend money. You can, however, top up your balance.

  • Is mining available on Tangem Wallet?

There are no restrictions for mining in UTXO-based blockchains (Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash, Kaspa, Ravencoin) on Android, and the wallet can sign thousands of inputs. On iOS, there is a temporary limit of up to 700 inputs per minute. In account-based blockchains, there is no concept of inputs, so there are no restrictions on mining with Tangem Wallet. Examples of account-based blockchains include Ethereum Classic, Ethereum Fair, Ethereum PoW.

  • How does biometric authentication work? How do I activate it?

You can use biometric authentication (fingerprint or facial recognition) instead of entering an access code and scanning your card to log in to the Tangem app, view your coin and token balances, switch between wallets if you have more than one.

To activate this biometric authentication, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Tangem app.
    2. Tap on the three dots in the top right corner of the screen.
    3. Go to "App Settings".
    4. Enable "Wallet saving" and "Access code saving".

When you enable "Wallet saving", all Tangem wallets (if there is more than one) will be linked to the app. You can now gain access to the app with biometric authentication.

When you enable "Save access code", the access codes will be stored on your phone in encrypted form. When dealing with the cards, you'll have to use biometric authentication instead of an access code.
Important! To sign a transaction, you must still need your Tangem card.

  • Is it safe to use biometrics?

When using biometric authentication, the access code from the card is stored in encrypted form in the device's secure storage: the keychain. In this case, the keys do not migrate anywhere from the card. The access code, meanwhile, has no functional value without the card. It is important to note that this function is optional and can be disabled at any time or not enabled at all. You can read more about how biometric authentication works in our blog article.
