Ripple unveils quantum-resistant XRP Ledger roadmap

Ripple is launching a four-stage plan to make the XRP Ledger quantum-resistant by 2028, including new cryptography, parallel systems, and emergency protocols as quantum and AI advances threaten blockchain security.

Ripple has unveiled a comprehensive four-stage roadmap to prepare the XRP Ledger for the era of quantum computing, targeting full quantum resistance by 2028. The plan begins with assessing current vulnerabilities and testing NIST-standard post-quantum cryptographic algorithms, such as ML-DSA and Dilithium. Next, Ripple will run both current and quantum-resistant systems in parallel, ensuring a smooth transition. An emergency response protocol will be in place should quantum threats materialize sooner than anticipated. This initiative is driven by research showing that 500,000 qubits could break elliptic curve cryptography in just nine minutes, posing a serious risk to blockchain security. Currently, only 0.03% of XRP supply is exposed in dormant accounts, which is less than Bitcoin’s exposure. Ripple’s migration plan leverages the XRP Ledger’s ability to change account control keys without altering accounts, simplifying future upgrades. The transition will require validator coordination and infrastructure improvements, as AI accelerates cryptography research. Bitcoin and Ethereum are also working on similar quantum-resistant upgrades.
