UK FCA Sets September 2026 for Mandatory Crypto Licensing
The UK FCA will require crypto firms to apply for new licenses starting September 2026, with full compliance needed by October 2027. Firms must secure FSMA authorization or face restrictions on new services.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will introduce a new crypto licensing regime, requiring all crypto asset service providers to obtain formal authorization under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) before the new regulatory framework takes effect in October 2027. The application window for this authorization is expected to open in September 2026, with at least a 28-day period for firms to submit their applications. Firms currently registered under anti-money laundering or payment regulations must reapply for FSMA authorization, as there will be no automatic conversion. Existing FSMA-authorized firms must adjust their permissions to include crypto activities. Firms relying on third-party FCA authorization for financial promotions must obtain direct authorization to continue marketing to UK customers. Those who miss the application deadline may face transitional restrictions, such as being unable to offer new products or services, though a saving provision allows continued operation while applications are reviewed. The FCA will provide information sessions and pre-application support, but these do not guarantee approval. The interim licensing system will operate until the full regime launches in October 2027, aiming to enhance consumer protection and market integrity.
