Sheriffs’ Association shifts to neutral on CLARITY Act

The National Sheriffs’ Association has moved to a neutral stance on the CLARITY Act, easing a key obstacle before the Senate vote, though ethics concerns remain.

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) has shifted its position on the CLARITY Act, a significant U.S. crypto regulation bill, moving from opposition to neutrality just before a crucial Senate vote. Previously, the NSA warned that the bill’s provisions for decentralized finance (DeFi) could hinder law enforcement’s ability to combat illicit finance. In a letter to Senate leaders, the NSA cited the bill’s complexity and unresolved details as reasons for stepping back. The association stated it would no longer urge senators to reject the bill, but it would not endorse it either. This change removes a major law enforcement obstacle for the bill’s supporters, especially among swing-vote Democrats, ahead of the September 15 cloture vote. Despite this shift, unresolved issues—such as ethics concerns regarding officials’ crypto holdings—remain. The NSA’s withdrawal is seen as a key development, but the outcome of the Senate vote and the bill’s ultimate passage are still uncertain.
