CuspAI raises $450M for AI-driven materials discovery
CuspAI raised $450M, boosting its valuation to $2.6B. The startup uses AI to discover new materials and partners with major firms, but has yet to achieve commercial results.
CuspAI, a Cambridge-based startup, has raised $450 million in Series B funding, increasing its valuation from $520 million in September to $2.6 billion. The round attracted major investors such as Jeff Bezos’ fund, the UK government, AMD Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and NEA. CuspAI uses generative AI to accelerate the discovery and design of new materials for semiconductors, batteries, catalysts, and membranes. The company aims to reduce reliance on rare metals like ruthenium and iridium. It recently launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of over 48 partners including Nvidia, Meta, Hyundai, and ASML, to drive industrial applications. Despite forming significant industry partnerships and assembling an advisory board of prominent AI experts, CuspAI has yet to produce commercially viable molecules beyond laboratory testing. The investment signals a shift in AI funding toward scientific discovery and industrial innovation, with potential for breakthroughs and new licensing opportunities, though risks remain if the technology does not deliver usable materials within industrial timelines.
