HSBC and Standard Chartered complete blockchain transaction

HSBC and Standard Chartered completed the first live cross-border tokenized deposit transaction on Swift’s blockchain ledger, advancing digital finance.

HSBC and Standard Chartered have completed the first live cross-border tokenized deposit transaction using Swift’s blockchain-based ledger. This marks a significant milestone in digital finance and the modernization of international payments. The transaction demonstrated interoperability between the banks’ distinct tokenized deposit platforms. Payment messages were exchanged, and obligations were recorded on each bank’s infrastructure. Swift’s ledger acted as an orchestration layer, matching and netting obligations before final settlement through existing payment systems. This achievement follows Swift’s July 2026 announcement of its blockchain ledger’s readiness for deployment, with 17 global banks set to pilot live transactions. The new system enables 24/7 cross-border payments, enhances liquidity management, and maintains current settlement, compliance, and risk controls. This is the first real-world instance of regulated digital bank money moving directly between institutions on Swift’s shared ledger, bypassing traditional correspondent banking rails.
