Ethereum Boosts Scalability: Blob Limit Raised to 21

Ethereum raised its blob limit to 21 in a recent hard fork, boosting data capacity and scalability. The upgrade allows more transactions per block, supports rollups, and keeps fees stable.

Ethereum has implemented its second Blob Parameter-Only (BPO) hard fork, raising the blob limit from 15 to 21 and the blob target from 10 to 14. This upgrade increases the network’s data capacity to about 2.6 MB per block, allowing more transactions to be batched via rollups and reducing network congestion. The changes are designed to improve transaction throughput, maintain stable gas fees, and support the growing activity of Layer 2 networks. Blobs, which temporarily store transaction data, help rollups efficiently bundle and return transactions to the Ethereum chain. On-chain data shows that blob usage remains below capacity, indicating significant headroom for future growth. Developers are planning further upgrades, including increasing the gas limit and introducing parallel processing, to further enhance scalability and efficiency. The fork demonstrates Ethereum’s ability to dynamically adjust data capacity, smoothing rollup fee dynamics and turning data availability into a controllable resource.
