Solana tests Alpenglow upgrade for faster finality
Solana is testing its Alpenglow upgrade, aiming to cut transaction finality from 13 seconds to 150 milliseconds with the new Votor protocol. Mainnet launch is planned for late September, pending confirmation.
Solana has launched public testnet trials for its Alpenglow upgrade, targeting a dramatic reduction in transaction finality from about 13 seconds to just 150 milliseconds. This is achieved by replacing the TowerBFT consensus mechanism with a new protocol called Votor, which enables validators to reach consensus in one or two voting rounds. With Alpenglow, transactions are expected to become nearly irreversible almost instantly. This advancement could unlock new possibilities for trading applications, cross-chain bridges, and automated strategies that depend on rapid confirmation. The upgrade is currently being tested with the Agave 4.3 client, while other validator clients like Firedancer and Frankendancer are not yet compatible. Mainnet activation is tentatively planned for late September, though no official date has been set. The upgrade focuses solely on the consensus layer and does not impact transaction execution, programs, or fees. Meanwhile, Solana’s ETF products have seen strong inflows, and network activity remains high, reflecting growing institutional and application-layer interest as the upgrade approaches.
