Nvidia, Google, and Emerald AI launch AI energy alliance
Nvidia, Google, and Emerald AI formed an alliance to create flexible AI data centers that adjust power use to grid needs, aiming to ease grid pressure and set new industry standards.
Nvidia, Google, and Emerald AI have launched the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) to tackle the rising energy demands of AI data centers. The alliance focuses on developing flexible data centers that can dynamically adjust electricity consumption based on real-time grid conditions, rather than maintaining constant power use. This strategy aims to unlock existing grid capacity, speed up the integration of new AI facilities, and minimize the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades. AEMA will set technology-neutral standards and unified benchmarks for response speed, reliability, and operational performance. Flexible data centers under AEMA's framework could shift computing workloads, use energy storage, tap backup generation, or reduce demand during grid stress. The initiative brings together AI and energy sector stakeholders to collaborate on technical and regulatory solutions, making data centers valuable, controllable assets for the power grid. Global data center electricity use rose 17% in 2025 and could reach 950 TWh by 2030.
