OpenAI blocks rival ads, expands ChatGPT, launches new features
OpenAI blocks rival AI ads on ChatGPT, launches new features, partners with Amazon for in-chat ads, expands US public-sector access, and offers free Sunburst image model trials.
OpenAI has quietly revised its advertising policies for ChatGPT, now blocking rival AI companies from promoting image and audio generation tools on the platform. This unexpected move has impacted major advertisers like Adobe, which can no longer promote its Firefly AI image generator or Acrobat Studio. The policy update coincided with the launch of ChatGPT Images 2.5 and ChatGPT Live voice features, reflecting OpenAI’s strategy to prioritize its own products as it aims for $2.4 billion in annual ad revenue, having already reached a $1 billion run rate. Meanwhile, Amazon will enable select US brands to place ads in ChatGPT using its advertising infrastructure. These ads will appear below AI-generated responses and be clearly separated, raising questions about transparency and privacy. Additionally, OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT access to 23 million US public-sector employees, moving from a $1-per-agency pilot to a usage-based pricing model with a 50% discount for government bodies. Arena is also offering free 72-hour access to OpenAI’s new Sunburst image model, which quickly topped Arena’s image generation leaderboards.
