Buterin proposes EIP-8288 for quantum-secure Ethereum
Vitalik Buterin’s EIP-8288 aims to cut costs for quantum-secure and privacy transactions on Ethereum, supporting advanced signatures without EVM changes.
Vitalik Buterin has introduced EIP-8288, a pivotal proposal for Ethereum’s forthcoming I-Star upgrade. This initiative suggests a recursive STARK mempool design, which aims to significantly reduce the cost and computational burden of quantum-secure and privacy-focused transactions. EIP-8288 achieves this by moving signatures and cryptographic proofs outside Ethereum’s core execution process, aggregating them within the mempool. As a result, the gas required for quantum-safe operations could drop from about 10 million to just tens of thousands. The proposal enables support for advanced signature schemes like Falcon and ML-DSA without altering the Ethereum Virtual Machine. It also facilitates privacy-enhancing account abstraction. With a non-negotiable quantum resistance deadline set for December 2029 by the Ethereum Foundation, EIP-8288 is seen as a major step toward making Ethereum more secure, efficient, and future-ready.
