Lattice Jolt: Quantum-resistant zkVM debuts with Akita

a16z Crypto and LayerZero have introduced Lattice Jolt, an advanced open-source zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) designed to address quantum computing threats. Unlike traditional zkVMs, Lattice Jolt replaces elliptic-curve cryptography with lattice-based cryptography, ensuring quantum-resistant security. The new zkVM integrates Akita, a lattice-based polynomial commitment scheme developed in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Southern California. Akita aligns with NIST post-quantum standards and is described as the first production-ready, lattice-based scheme of its kind. Lattice Jolt achieves 2-3 times faster prover and verifier speeds and delivers proof sizes as small as 65-100KB—the smallest among quantum-resistant zkVMs—with potential for further compression. Currently being tested on LayerZero’s Zero network, Lattice Jolt is expected to enhance cross-chain interactions and developer capabilities. Industry leaders like Coinbase, Stanford, and Localhost Research are also advancing quantum readiness, organizing workshops to prepare for a post-quantum future as research suggests quantum computers may break current cryptography sooner than anticipated.
