Ethereum’s 2027 upgrade targets privacy and fee changes
Ethereum’s 2027 Hegotá upgrade could let privacy pools pay fees directly, reduce intermediaries, and boost privacy. Key proposals include Frame Transactions and FOCIL. Regular ETH transfers will remain public.
Ethereum developers are planning the Hegotá upgrade for 2027, aiming to enhance privacy and transaction flexibility. A central proposal, EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions), would let privacy pools pay their own transaction fees, reducing reliance on third-party intermediaries and minimizing metadata exposure. This programmable transaction format would give wallets more control over validation, execution, and gas payments, enabling features like gas sponsorship and alternative signature systems. Another major proposal, FOCIL (EIP-7805), seeks to ensure eligible privacy transactions are included on the network and are harder to censor. Additional proposals, such as EIP-8182 and EIP-8272, aim to introduce native shielded pools and improve transaction ordering and verification. While FOCIL is the only confirmed feature so far, 66 proposals are under review. The upgrade will not make standard Ethereum transfers private; regular ETH transactions will remain publicly visible. These changes mark a significant step toward embedding privacy features directly into Ethereum’s protocol.
