David Schwartz, former CTO of Ripple and a core developer of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), has addressed renewed concerns about front-running and sandwich attacks on the XRPL. These issues particularly affect decentralized exchange (DEX) and automated market maker (AMM) trades. Community members, such as XRPresso, highlighted that validators and well-connected nodes can view pending transactions in the pre-validation queue, analyze them, and potentially submit their own transactions to secure a more favorable position in the ledger. Schwartz acknowledged the theoretical risk but downplayed its practical impact. He explained that all pending transactions are publicly visible, and running a validator does not offer a unique advantage unless multiple validators collude. To mitigate these concerns, Schwartz proposed a transaction reservation scheme. This system would let users reserve execution priority by submitting only a transaction ID and paying a higher fee, securing a slot in a future ledger before revealing full transaction details. The proposal introduces new ledger objects and transaction types to promote fairer transaction ordering and reduce front-running and sandwich attack risks as XRPL's DeFi ecosystem grows.
