Base, an Ethereum Layer-2 network developed by Coinbase, faced a significant outage on June 25, 2026. A consensus issue allowed an invalid block to be sequenced, halting block production after block 47806542. The disruption began around 16:03 UTC, affecting deposits, withdrawals, and client software due to unreliable block production. Engineers traced the problem to a consensus flaw that disrupted the sequencer, pinpointing a problematic block that interfered with subsequent block building. Throughout the incident, the team provided regular updates and assured users that all funds remained secure. By 17:51 UTC, sequencing of new blocks resumed, and by 17:58 UTC, healthy block production was restored, moving the incident into monitoring. Although the outage coincided with a scheduled upgrade, it appeared unrelated. The event highlighted ongoing concerns about the stability of Base’s centralized sequencer, which has previously caused outages during high-traffic periods due to its lack of failover mechanisms.
