Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has reignited debate over the security of Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) networks, cautioning that they are "not quantum safe" and urging vigilance regarding their long-term resilience. Yakovenko's concerns focus on Ethereum L2s' reliance on multisignature governance and the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) with the secp256k1 curve, which could be susceptible to future quantum computer attacks. He argues that these systems add extra trust layers and complexity, straying from the permissionless design of Layer 1 networks and potentially introducing vulnerabilities. In contrast, Solana is advancing post-quantum cryptography, notably by integrating the Falcon digital signature scheme, with technical teams Anza and Firedancer leading the initiative. Yakovenko's warning comes amid wider industry concerns about quantum threats, with other networks like Cardano also developing quantum-resistant solutions. His remarks underscore the need for blockchain networks to proactively adapt their security measures in anticipation of quantum computing advancements.
