Ripple has announced a comprehensive, multi-phase roadmap to make the XRP Ledger (XRPL) quantum-resistant by 2028. This initiative is in response to advances in quantum computing, such as research from Google Quantum AI, which has exposed vulnerabilities in current blockchain cryptography. The roadmap includes four phases focused on maintaining network integrity and preparing contingency measures if quantum threats emerge sooner than expected. A major concern is the "harvest now, decrypt later" risk, where attackers could collect encrypted blockchain data now and decrypt it in the future when quantum computers are more powerful. XRPL’s native key rotation and seed-based key generation provide structural advantages, enabling users to migrate to more secure keys without changing accounts or moving assets. Ripple is collaborating with Project Eleven for validator testing, Devnet benchmarking, and custody wallet development. The plan also involves establishing a Quantum-Day response, enforcing a hard migration from vulnerable cryptography if necessary, and exploring post-quantum zero-knowledge proofs for account recovery. Ripple aims to ensure XRPL’s long-term security as quantum computing evolves.
