PsiQuantum has started building a 1 million-qubit quantum computing facility in Chicago, a scale that experts believe could theoretically break Bitcoin's cryptography. Backed by $1 billion in funding and a partnership with Nvidia, this project has reignited debate within the crypto community about Bitcoin’s long-term security. PsiQuantum’s leadership has stated they do not intend to attack Bitcoin. However, experts warn that quantum computers could eventually compromise the cryptographic schemes protecting Bitcoin wallets, especially through algorithms like Shor’s. Despite this, the immediate threat is considered minimal, with stakeholders emphasizing preparedness over panic. In response, Blockstream has deployed the first live post-quantum-signed transactions on its Liquid sidechain. Utilizing the SHRINCS hash-based signature scheme and Simplicity smart contracts, this marks a significant step toward quantum-resistant Bitcoin infrastructure. This deployment secures real funds and demonstrates practical progress in addressing potential quantum threats, even as the timeline for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer remains uncertain.
