Base network moves toward independence from Optimism

Base will leave the Optimism OP Stack for its own codebase, aiming for faster upgrades and autonomy. This may end revenue sharing with Optimism and reshape the layer-2 ecosystem.

Coinbase's Base network, a leading Ethereum layer-2 solution, is making a significant shift by moving away from the Optimism OP Stack, the open-source framework it initially adopted. Instead, Base will transition to a unified, proprietary codebase managed internally. This change aims to streamline development, reduce maintenance, and enable faster, more targeted upgrades—doubling annual hard-forks to six. Node operators must migrate to the new Base client to remain compatible. The move is expected to grant Base greater autonomy, allowing for tailored technology to meet specific network needs and long-term goals. Financially, this could end Base's revenue-sharing agreement with Optimism, potentially impacting the OP treasury, as Base previously contributed a notable portion of Superchain sequencer revenue. While Base will maintain OP Stack compatibility during the transition, this marks a strategic shift toward technological independence and could reshape partnerships and revenue streams within the layer-2 ecosystem.
