Open USD stablecoin debuts with major industry backing
Open USD, a new stablecoin backed by 140+ major firms, features consortium governance, zero-fee minting and redemption, and aims to connect traditional finance with digital assets.
Open USD (OUSD) is a newly launched stablecoin introduced by Open Standard, supported by over 140 leading financial and technology firms such as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, BlackRock, Coinbase, Google, and Shopify. Designed for global payments and settlements, OUSD operates under a consortium-governance model, allowing partners to share reserve earnings and participate directly in governance, moving away from the single-issuer approach. Businesses can mint and redeem OUSD tokens without fees or volume limits, aiming to lower costs and reduce friction for corporate users. The stablecoin’s reserves will be held at major financial institutions in compliance with US regulations, though detailed information about these reserves remains undisclosed. OUSD seeks to bridge the gap between traditional finance and digital assets, offering a more open and cost-effective alternative to existing stablecoins. The public unveiling occurred on June 30, 2026, with the official launch expected later in the year.
