DoorDash launches stablecoin payouts with Tempo
DoorDash teams up with Tempo to offer stablecoin payouts, aiming to speed up and lower the cost of global payments. The initiative may face regulatory challenges but could expand DoorDash’s payment services.
DoorDash has announced a partnership with Tempo, a blockchain platform backed by Stripe and Paradigm, to introduce stablecoin-powered payouts for merchants and drivers worldwide. This initiative targets common payment challenges, including slow settlement, high costs, and foreign exchange volatility, especially in cross-border transactions. Initially, DoorDash will focus on merchant payouts, with plans to potentially expand to contractors and drivers. With operations in over 40 countries and nearly $75 billion in merchant sales processed last year, DoorDash aims to position itself as both a logistics and payment platform, opening new monetization opportunities through payment rails and partnerships. The adoption of stablecoins for high-frequency micropayments reflects a broader industry trend, as stablecoin transaction volumes are projected to reach $33 trillion by 2025. However, regulatory hurdles and banking partner resistance could impact the scalability and cost-effectiveness of this program. Other major payment players, such as Stripe, Coastal Bank, and ARQ, are also integrating Tempo’s stablecoin rails into their systems.
