OKX gains Malta license for EU stablecoin payments

OKX secured a Malta PI license, enabling regulated stablecoin payments across the EU and supporting products like OKX Pay and the Mastercard-linked OKX Card.

OKX has secured a Payment Institution (PI) license from Malta’s financial authorities, allowing it to offer regulated stablecoin payment services across the European Union. This license ensures OKX’s compliance with the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation and the Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2), both of which require crypto firms handling stablecoin payments to hold a PI or Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license. The approval supports OKX’s products such as OKX Pay and the Mastercard-linked OKX Card, enabling stablecoin-based payments for everyday transactions. The new license complements OKX’s earlier MiCA authorization and positions the company to expand its payment operations throughout the EU. Malta’s progressive regulatory environment, highlighted by its Virtual Financial Assets Act, further strengthens OKX’s compliance and operational standards as the EU prepares for stricter enforcement of crypto regulations in 2026.
