Irish police X accounts hacked for crypto scams
An Garda Síochána’s X accounts were hacked, rebranded, and used for crypto promotions. Locations changed to Amsterdam. An official investigation is underway.
Several official X (formerly Twitter) accounts managed by An Garda Síochána, including @GardaTraffic and @GardaInfo, have been compromised in a recent security breach. Hackers removed the official branding, changed the accounts’ locations to Amsterdam, and began posting numerous cryptocurrency promotions, including phishing content related to XRP. Some of these posts were flagged by the platform for suspicious activity. Notably, the @GardaInfo account’s handle was altered to resemble a support account for a cryptocurrency wallet. Both accounts have significant followings: @GardaTraffic with around 600,000 followers and @GardaInfo with nearly 300,000. This incident has raised concerns about the security of official social media channels and the risk of misleading the public. An Garda Síochána has acknowledged the breach and announced that an official investigation statement will be released soon.
