Australian police seize $4.1M in Bitcoin in darknet raid
Australian police seized 52.3 Bitcoin worth $4.1M after a 15-month probe into a Sydney darknet market. Two men were arrested in one of Australia’s largest crypto seizures.
Australian authorities in New South Wales have seized 52.3 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $4.1 million, after a 15-month investigation into an illegal darknet marketplace operating from Sydney. The operation, led by Strike Force Andalusia of the NSW Police Cybercrime Squad, is considered one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures in Australian history. The investigation targeted a darknet market suspected of facilitating illegal drug and weapon transactions. On May 4, police raided a residence in Ingleburn, southwest Sydney, confiscating electronic devices and wallets containing the Bitcoin. Two men, aged 41 and 39, were arrested and are set to face court proceedings in the coming months. This crackdown comes as Australia tightens cryptocurrency regulations. AUSTRAC is increasing anti-money laundering checks, and new digital asset framework laws are being introduced to bring crypto platforms under financial licensing regulations by 2027. The seizure highlights law enforcement’s growing ability to trace and recover digital assets linked to criminal activity.
