Global crypto scam crackdown: 276 arrested, $562M saved
Dubai Police, the FBI, and Chinese authorities arrested 276 people and shut down nine crypto scam centers, preventing $562M in losses and charging six with fraud and money laundering.
A major international crackdown, led by Dubai Police in collaboration with the FBI and China’s Ministry of Public Security, resulted in the arrest of 276 individuals and the dismantling of at least nine crypto scam centers. The operation specifically targeted organized fraud rings running “pig butchering” schemes, which deceive victims into investing in fake crypto platforms. Of those arrested, 275 were apprehended in Dubai and one in Thailand. Six suspects have been charged in a US federal court with fraud and money laundering, facing up to 20 years in prison and substantial fines. Authorities estimate that nearly 9,000 potential victims were warned, preventing losses of approximately $562 million. Separate actions in Europe dismantled additional scam centers in Albania, linked to over €50 million in damages. Law enforcement agencies highlighted the critical role of international cooperation in combating these sophisticated, cross-border crypto fraud networks.
