The Ethereum Foundation, through its ETH Rangers Program and the Ketman Project, has uncovered approximately 100 North Korean IT operatives infiltrating 53 Web3 and crypto projects over six months. This initiative, in collaboration with security groups like The Red Guild, Security Alliance, and Secureum, identified these operatives using fake identities and detected nearly 800 security vulnerabilities. As a result, the program facilitated the recovery or freezing of over $5.8 million in assets. It also led to the creation of open-source tools and frameworks to help organizations detect suspicious activity and bolster their security posture. These findings highlight a shift in threat vectors from technical exploits to insider infiltration, emphasizing the urgent need for vigilance against both technical and human security risks in the crypto ecosystem. Projects were directly warned about potential infiltrations, and the industry is urged to address both technical and recruitment-based vulnerabilities.
