Aave faces $27M liquidations after risk tool glitch
Aave saw $27M in liquidations after a risk tool glitch caused incorrect collateral valuations. The issue is fixed, and user compensation is being discussed.
Aave, a leading decentralized lending protocol, recently faced a rare incident resulting in around $27 million in liquidations within 24 hours. This event was caused by a technical flaw in the external risk management tool CAPO, which triggered erroneous or premature liquidations, especially for users holding wstETH as collateral. The root of the problem was a misconfiguration or synchronization failure in the oracle system that supplies real-time price data. This led to incorrect collateral valuations and forced liquidations, with liquidators profiting from the situation. Importantly, no bad debt was incurred, and Aave’s economic design remained secure. The Aave team has since resolved the configuration issue and is considering compensation for affected users. The incident highlights the critical importance of reliable oracles and robust risk management in DeFi, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and improved safeguards.
