UK Crypto Ownership Plummets to 8% Despite Rising Balances

UK crypto ownership fell from 12% to 8% in 2025, but average holdings per user increased. Public awareness remains high, and new regulations are being developed for the sector.

UK crypto ownership has experienced a notable decline, dropping from 12% of adults in 2024 to 8% in 2025, according to recent Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) surveys conducted with YouGov. This marks the first year-on-year fall since 2021, reversing previous gains. Despite the decrease in the number of holders, the average value of crypto holdings per person has increased, with 21% of users now holding between £1,001 and £5,000, and the mean value per holder rising to nearly $2,500. Public awareness of cryptocurrencies remains high at 91%. Bitcoin and ether are the most popular assets, held by 70% and 35% of investors, respectively. Centralized exchanges remain the primary entry point for most users. The FCA is consulting on new regulations, with licensing for crypto firms set to begin in 2026 and full rules rolling out in 2027. The total value of crypto owned in the UK is estimated at $17.3 billion as of October 2025.
