Rodney Burton, known as "Bitcoin Rodney," faces 11 federal charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, for his alleged role in promoting the $1.8 billion HyperFund cryptocurrency scheme from June 2020 to May 2024. Prosecutors allege Burton used investor funds to purchase luxury condos, sports cars, and a yacht, while HyperFund promised daily returns from non-existent crypto mining operations and began blocking withdrawals in 2021. Co-defendant Brenda Chunga has pleaded guilty, while alleged co-founder Sam Lee remains at large. Burton was detained in January 2024 at Miami International Airport and denied bail as an "extreme flight risk." If convicted on all counts, he faces decades in prison. The case highlights ongoing regulatory challenges and risks in the cryptocurrency sector, with Burton's trial scheduled for March next year.
