Albuquerque bans crypto ATMs over fraud concerns
Albuquerque has banned all crypto ATMs and cashier-assisted transactions, citing rising fraud. Operators must remove machines within 45 days or face fines and penalties.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, has implemented a comprehensive ban on cryptocurrency kiosks, including Bitcoin ATMs, through a new Virtual Currency Ordinance effective October 21. The ordinance, passed by a 6-3 city council vote and signed into law, prohibits all crypto ATMs and cashier-assisted crypto transactions within city limits. Operators are required to immediately deactivate their machines and have 45 days to remove them. Failure to comply will result in daily fines, license revocation, and additional penalties. City officials attribute the ban to a rise in scams, particularly those targeting vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Fraudsters have used these kiosks to coerce victims into depositing cash, making fund recovery nearly impossible once transferred to digital wallets. This action underscores Albuquerque's commitment to consumer protection and combating crypto-related fraud.
