ABIB argues that the ABC's coverage relied on outdated stereotypes, sensational language, and omitted well-documented benefits such as energy grid support and humanitarian aid. The complaint highlights that only 0.14% of Bitcoin transactions are linked to criminal activity, referencing a Chainalysis report, and contrasts this with higher rates of illicit use in fiat currencies. The crypto lobby and ABIB assert that such reporting misleads the public, shapes negative perceptions, and could influence regulatory decisions. ABIB has demanded corrections and cited breaches of editorial standards, with the ABC given 60 days to respond before the matter may be escalated to the media regulator for further investigation and possible enforcement action.
