US freezes $130M in crypto linked to Iran’s central bank

US Treasury froze $130M in crypto wallets linked to Iran’s central bank, including four Tron wallets with $131M USDT, as part of broader sanctions on Iran’s digital asset infrastructure.

The US Treasury has frozen over $130 million in cryptocurrency wallets linked to Iran’s central bank, intensifying efforts against Iran’s digital asset infrastructure. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the action, which included sanctioning several wallets—among them, four Tron wallets holding about $131 million in USDT, now frozen by Tether. These wallets are listed on the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s (OFAC) Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list and are directly associated with the Central Bank of Iran. This move follows an earlier action in April, when $344 million in USDT was blocked in wallets tied to Iranian state actors. The Treasury emphasized its ongoing commitment to disrupting Iran’s financial activities involving digital assets and will continue to trace and block funds linked to Iranian government revenue networks. These sanctions form part of a broader package targeting individuals, entities, and networks involved in Iran’s core economic sectors.
