New Hampshire enacts blockchain law, expands crypto protections

New Hampshire passed the Blockchain Basics Law, granting legal protections for blockchain innovation, crypto users, and self-custody, while establishing a special court docket for related disputes.

New Hampshire has further established itself as a crypto-friendly state with Governor Kelly Ayotte signing the Blockchain Basics Law (HB 639). This legislation introduces a comprehensive legal framework that protects blockchain innovation and supports cryptocurrency adoption. Notably, it explicitly grants self-custody rights to digital asset holders, ensuring individuals have control over their crypto assets. The law also creates a dedicated docket in the state’s superior court for blockchain-related disputes, aiming to provide legal clarity for users, developers, and businesses. This move is designed to foster confidence and certainty in the state’s digital asset ecosystem. Previously, New Hampshire became the first state to allow up to 5% of public funds to be invested in Bitcoin, although a proposal for Bitcoin-backed municipal bonds was recently rejected. The new legislative package includes additional measures to protect crypto holders and promote blockchain development, reinforcing New Hampshire’s leadership in digital asset regulation and innovation.
