EU Parliament urges review of crypto rules for DeFi, NFTs
The EU Parliament’s ECON committee urges a review of crypto rules for DeFi, staking, lending, and NFTs, and supports euro stablecoins. The report guides policy but adds no new legal requirements.
The European Parliament's Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) has called on the European Commission to assess whether further regulations are needed for decentralized finance (DeFi), staking, lending, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the crypto asset sector. The committee also recommended promoting tokenization in financial services and supporting euro-denominated stablecoins. A report, authored by Johan Van Overtveldt, has been submitted for a plenary vote scheduled for July 7. If adopted, the report will establish the Parliament’s official position on digital asset policy, though it will not directly amend the MiCA framework or introduce new legal obligations. The committee emphasized the need for consistent MiCA implementation across all EU member states to ensure fair competition among crypto companies. The report highlights growing support for euro-denominated stablecoins and the importance of addressing regulatory gaps in the crypto market.
