EU launches MiCA review: Public feedback sought on crypto rules
The European Commission is reviewing MiCA, the EU's crypto regulation, via public and targeted consultations open until August 31. The process aims to assess MiCA's effectiveness and may lead to updates by 2026.
The European Commission has initiated a formal consultation to review the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This process invites feedback from individuals, companies, and industry bodies until August 31. The goal is to assess whether MiCA remains effective and appropriate as digital asset markets and global regulations evolve. The review features two tracks: a public consultation for general feedback and a targeted consultation for technical and legal input from industry specialists. MiCA, which harmonized EU rules in 2024, covers crypto-asset issuers, asset-referenced tokens, e-money tokens, and service providers. This consultation precedes the July 2026 deadline for crypto firms to secure full MiCA authorization. Recent milestones include the first firm in the Netherlands obtaining both a MiCA CASP license and an Electronic Money Institution license, as well as Poland passing its domestic MiCA implementation bill. The feedback will help shape future updates to ensure the framework meets market needs and aligns with international trends.
