Morgan Stanley: Bitcoin on U.S. bank balance sheets delayed

Morgan Stanley sees Bitcoin on U.S. bank balance sheets as likely, but regulatory, operational, and educational hurdles mean the process will take longer than expected, despite strong demand and new products.

Morgan Stanley is signaling that Bitcoin could eventually appear on U.S. bank balance sheets, but significant regulatory, operational, and educational barriers remain. The bank recently launched MSBT, the first bank-issued Bitcoin ETP, which attracted over $100 million in its first week, all from self-directed clients. Despite formally recommending a 2–4% Bitcoin allocation, advisor adoption has been slow, revealing an education gap. Regulatory challenges, such as Federal Reserve guidance, Basel Committee rules, and the need for global regulatory alignment, are the main obstacles. Morgan Stanley is preparing to expand its digital asset offerings and is pursuing an OCC digital trust charter to custody crypto directly and offer spot trading. While the regulatory environment is improving, the timeline for banks to hold Bitcoin directly remains uncertain and is likely longer than many expect. Institutional demand and evolving policies suggest U.S. banks may eventually play a central role in crypto adoption, but the transition is still in its early stages.
