UK proposes ban on crypto donations in politics

UK Parliament urges a ban on crypto donations to political parties, citing high risks, traceability concerns, and potential cyber threats, while seeking to improve transparency in political financing.

The UK Parliamentary Committee has described cryptocurrency donations as an "unnecessary and unacceptably high risk" to the integrity of political financing. In its latest report, the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS) recommends a binding moratorium on crypto donations, to be included in the Representation of the People Bill. The committee also calls for the creation of a National Political Finance Enforcement Unit within the National Crime Agency and stricter rules for foreign donors. The report highlights that cryptocurrencies, due to their pseudonymous nature and the use of privacy tools like mixers and privacy coins, can circumvent existing regulations, making it difficult to trace the origin of funds. Additionally, the report warns about the use of AI to split large donations into unreportable microdonations. Some experts caution that KYC-based bans could introduce new cyber risks by centralizing donor data, potentially making them targets for cyberattacks. The proposed measures aim to safeguard election integrity and enhance transparency in political financing.
