Coinbase and JPMorgan CEOs clash over crypto bill at Davos

Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong and JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon clashed at Davos over U.S. crypto legislation, with Dimon accusing Armstrong of dishonesty regarding banks’ opposition to crypto-friendly bills.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, a heated exchange erupted between Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon. During a coffee meeting with former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, Dimon interrupted Armstrong, pointed at him, and accused him of being dishonest about banks’ efforts to block crypto-friendly legislation in the U.S. Congress. The dispute centers on the proposed Clarity Act, which seeks to regulate digital assets and allow exchanges to offer yield-like rewards on stablecoins—returns that outpace those from traditional banks. Armstrong argues that banks are using their legislative influence to stifle competition from crypto firms. Meanwhile, banking executives from institutions like Bank of America and Wells Fargo have dismissed Armstrong’s claims and opposed stablecoin rewards. This incident highlights the ongoing tension between traditional finance and the crypto industry as digital assets push for mainstream acceptance.
