Crypto Whales Bet Big: Massive Shorts and Accumulation Signal Turbulence

Crypto whales are making bold moves: HYPE sees heavy accumulation amid a sharp drop, while major shorts are opened on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, reflecting a defensive and bearish stance in volatile markets.

Recent crypto market activity has seen significant whale-driven moves across major assets. HYPE, the native token of Hyperliquid, dropped over 8.8% amid a broader altcoin correction following U.S. CPI data and Bitcoin's price reversal from $89,000. Despite the downtrend, on-chain data shows whales accumulating HYPE, with $37.1 million USDC deployed for buys, even as open interest in HYPE futures fell 20%. Meanwhile, a prominent Hyperliquid whale sold 255 BTC worth $21.77 million and opened 10× leveraged shorts on both Bitcoin and Ethereum, signaling a strong bearish outlook. Bitcoin and Ethereum prices have pulled back 3% and 5% respectively. In XRP, a whale opened a $1.56 million short at $1.86 during heightened volatility, aligning with other large short positions in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Additionally, another whale extended a 40x leveraged BTC short to $94.1 million on Hyperliquid, now the largest such position, with realized profits nearing $3 million since December 8. These moves highlight aggressive, risk-managed strategies by major players amid ongoing market uncertainty.
