Dormant Bitcoin wallet moves $383M, no sale detected

A dormant Bitcoin wallet from 2017 moved 5,908 BTC ($383M) to a new address. The coins, bought at $16,000 each, were not sent to an exchange, suggesting no immediate sale.

A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet, inactive since late 2017, has transferred its entire balance of 5,908 BTC—worth approximately $383 million—on Thursday. The coins were originally acquired when Bitcoin traded near $16,000, representing a 284% gain from the initial investment of about $100 million. Despite enduring significant market volatility, including an 80% drop in 2018 and a brief period underwater during the 2022 crash, the wallet remained untouched through multiple price cycles. This includes Bitcoin’s highs of $69,000 in 2021 and $122,000 in 2025. The recent transfer occurred with Bitcoin trading around $64,800, about half its 2025 peak. Blockchain data shows the funds were sent to a new, unidentified address rather than an exchange, suggesting the move may be related to internal asset management, security, or preparations for an over-the-counter deal, rather than an immediate sale. No evidence indicates the BTC was deposited on major exchanges.
