Samsung surpasses $1 trillion on AI chip demand

Samsung surpassed $1 trillion in market cap after a 15% stock surge, driven by record earnings and AI chip demand. The rally lifted the Kospi index, with analysts maintaining a bullish outlook.

Samsung Electronics has reached a historic milestone, surpassing a $1 trillion market capitalization after its stock surged 10–15% in local trading. This achievement makes Samsung only the second Asian company, after TSMC, to reach such a valuation. The rally was driven by record-breaking first-quarter earnings, with operating profit soaring over eightfold to 57.2 trillion won ($39 billion) and revenue hitting a record 133.9 trillion won. Strong demand for high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI applications, ongoing shortages of DRAM and NAND chips, and renewed investor optimism all contributed to the surge. Further momentum came from reports of Apple exploring chip production partnerships with Samsung and Intel, potentially shifting supply chains away from TSMC. The positive sentiment also boosted other semiconductor stocks, with SK Hynix jumping over 10% and South Korea’s Kospi index breaking the 7,000-point barrier for the first time. Analysts remain bullish, raising price targets and maintaining Buy ratings, reflecting confidence in Samsung’s continued growth in the AI and semiconductor sectors.
