CME crypto trading volume hits $3 trillion in 2025

CME Group's crypto futures and options hit $3T in 2025, with daily volumes and open interest doubling. Driven by Bitcoin, Ethereum, and new altcoin contracts, CME expanded to 24/7 trading and plans a Nasdaq CME Crypto Index.

CME Group achieved record-breaking growth in its cryptocurrency futures and options markets in 2025. Trading volumes soared to nearly $3 trillion, with average daily volumes more than doubling to 280,000 contracts, equivalent to about $12 billion. Open interest also surged, reaching 313,000 contracts, or $26 billion, while the number of large open interest holders hit a record 1,039. The fourth quarter saw a 92% year-over-year increase in trading volume and a doubling of open interest, fueled by strong activity in Bitcoin and Ethereum futures, as well as new Solana and Ripple contracts. Micro contracts and products like MET set new trading records, and spot-quoted futures such as QBTC achieved significant milestones. This surge in activity prompted CME to introduce 24/7 trading for its crypto markets and announce plans for new altcoin contracts, including ADA, LINK, and XLM, pending regulatory approval. CME is also preparing to launch a Nasdaq CME Crypto Index by the end of 2025, further expanding its regulated offerings.
