Optimism to Use 50% Superchain Revenue for OP Token Buybacks

Optimism proposes using 50% of Superchain revenue for monthly OP token buybacks, aiming to link token value to network growth. The plan awaits a governance vote and could begin in February 2025.

The Optimism Foundation has proposed a significant change to its tokenomics by allocating 50% of Superchain revenue to monthly OP token buybacks for an initial 12-month period, pending a governance vote on January 22, 2025. If approved, the program will begin in February and aims to more closely tie the OP token’s value to the performance and growth of the Superchain, a network of Layer 2 chains built on the OP Stack, including Base, Unichain, World Chain, and others. Over the past year, the Superchain generated 5,868 ETH in revenue, all previously directed to the governance treasury. Under the new proposal, half of future revenue will be used to purchase OP tokens, which will be held in the treasury for potential burning, redistribution, or rewards, depending on future governance decisions. The remaining revenue will continue to support ecosystem growth and operations. This marks a shift for OP from being primarily a governance token to one whose demand is directly linked to network activity and expansion. Community feedback has been largely supportive, with the initiative seen as a move toward sustainable ecosystem growth and stronger value accrual for OP holders.
