Crypto ETF Launch in South Korea Stalled Despite KRX Readiness
Korea Exchange is ready to launch crypto ETFs and extend trading hours, but regulatory delays and disputes over digital asset rules prevent their introduction, despite strong investor demand and upgraded infrastructure.
The Korea Exchange (KRX) is preparing to modernize South Korea's capital markets by introducing new investment products, including crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and derivatives, and extending trading hours with a long-term goal of 24/7 operations. KRX has upgraded its infrastructure and is operationally ready to support crypto ETFs, but current regulations do not recognize crypto assets as eligible underlying securities, preventing their launch. The Financial Services Commission has outlined a roadmap for spot crypto ETFs and is reviewing potential reforms, but regulatory approval remains stalled due to ongoing disputes, particularly over stablecoin governance. Despite growing demand from investors and political support, comprehensive digital asset legislation has been delayed, with authorities citing investor protection concerns. KRX also plans to implement AI-based monitoring and strengthen measures against unfair trading. The exchange's readiness contrasts with regulatory delays, leaving crypto ETFs outside the formal market for now.
